We have a lot of challenges in Iowa – one of the worst economies in the nation, public education under attack, and the highest cancer growth rate in the nation. We’re winning all the contests we want to lose, and losing all the contests we want to win. On top of that, our representatives aren’t focused on solving our problems and have even created new ones. They’re focused on politics and powerful insiders, not Iowans. They serve their party.

I’m running for governor because I want to change that and to end the monopoly of both parties.

Hunters value integrity, humility, championing others when they succeed, and giving a pat on the back when they fall short. We welcome newcomers with open arms and always look to pass down knowledge and expertise. You’ll routinely see me posting on the Trophy Bucks of Iowa and other Facebook hunting groups, or checking every aisle for some clever new idea at the Iowa Deer Classic. I am glad to participate in Iowa’s HUSH (Help Us Stop Hunger) program, which connects Iowa deer hunters with the Food Bank of Iowa, meat processors, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. I was glad to do that this year with the venison meat from my 206 buck, donating 46 pounds to the Iowa Food Bank.

For me, hunting is not only about tagging the biggest buck, although that’s a huge plus! It’s about preserving the Iowa way of life, coming together as a community, and honoring our outdoors. The values hunting has taught me are the same values I want to bring to the governor’s office. For the first time in Iowa history, hunters, sportsmen, conservationists, and outdoor enthusiasts alike will finally have an ally in the governor’s office. Together, we can ensure Iowa’s great outdoors – a key part of what makes our state unique – are protected and enjoyed for generations to come.

I grew up in Decorah, hunting, fishing, and enjoying Iowa’s great outdoors with my dad. He taught me how to shoot and hunt. I started out shooting pop cans with a gun to make them “pee,” then birds with friends, squirrels in the woods, and then eventually graduated to my first bow. My dad was the first person I told when I harvested my 206-inch buck – a buck of a lifetime – late last year. While I had taken eight Pope and Young bucks with my bow prior to that night, including a 159-incher at about seven yards and closing on the ground, it was a wonderful moment to bring to him. We’d shared a lifetime’s worth of fishing and hunting times together, and stories when we were not.

Passing these traditions down to my own two boys has been one of the great joys of fatherhood for me. But hunting is more than just a pastime, fond memories, or a tradition – it’s an escape, where I find a moment of clarity, and a place where I’ve found community and built relationships throughout my life. It’s also where I’ve had time to think about the state of things in Iowa, what some of our toughest challenges are, and where we go from here.
